Avia “Avi-Lite II” Unfortunatly most of you know Avia from big box non-technical shoe stores, but they do have a rich history in running going back to the old 2050 running shoe from the 80’s. Avia has been pushing performance with their name and the Avi-lite II come out winning. Building the Avia name with sports like Triathlon’s they are working on making footwear that offers good support and mild cushioning in as light of a package as possible. The Avi-lite II is the first model that I think really shows that they are on the right path.

| Avia “2052” has just been released and has made quite a nice first impression. Out-sole: is pretty straight foreword with durable rubber material. Dura-Stryk in the heel for longevity for all you heel strikers out there. The forefoot has several large flex groves which help this shoe keep what I think is one of Avia’s strongest advantages over many shoes from other brands. It is not only flexible, but it flexes at the ball of the foot which is right where you need it to. Mid-sole: is technical with 5 different density materials. I’ll go from the heel to the forefoot being that is how many runners run. The heel is made of 1. Polyurethane (PU), which is strong to keep its shape after many hard miles 2. there is a plastic (TPU) cradle/shank for mid-foot torsional strength. 3. Firm-density (EVA) foam under the arch for controlling over-pronation, 4. Soft-density (EVA) foam in the forefoot for cushioning during toe off. 5. DURA-RYD, which is in the heel and forefoot, which is a rubber/ foam alloy to cushion yet, be durable. WOW! That was a mouth full. As for the Upper: this is much simpler, which I think is the way to go when it comes to uppers anyway. Only point taken from the upper is how I can tell that Avia has picked up someone from the Asics drawing board room. The colors remind me of some other shoe. I’ll give you a hint the Avia fits wider than it. Haha! Conclusion: This is a great update. Probably not 100% as supportive as the semi-clunky 2051, but what it losses is way made up by what it gets right. Amazingly flexible and well-cushioned shoe. Fit may be a tad bit wide for some, but then that is why there are many shoe choices. Keep your eyes open for the trail version!!! |
